Backend Engineer

About the Role

The Backend Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining secure, scalable, and reliable backend services that power the Bank's digital products and customer-facing platforms. The role involves building APIs, integrating third-party services, managing data and transaction processing, and working closely with Product, Frontend, DevOps, QA, and other Technology teams to deliver high-quality digital banking solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable backend applications and services.
• Build secure, well-documented RESTful APIs and backend services.
• Develop backend solutions supporting digital banking products, payments, and transactions.
• Design and optimise databases while ensuring data integrity and reliability.
• Integrate payment gateways, financial APIs, internal systems, and third-party services.
• Implement secure authentication, authorisation, encryption, and access controls.
• Monitor and optimise system performance, scalability, and reliability.
• Write unit and integration tests and participate in code reviews.
• Work closely with QA and DevOps teams on testing, deployment, monitoring, and incident resolution.
• Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to translate business requirements into practical technical solutions.
• Troubleshoot production issues, conduct root cause analysis, and implement long-term solutions.

Required Qualifications

• 3–5 years of professional backend development experience, preferably within fintech, banking, payments, or digital products.
• Strong proficiency in Java, Python, Node.js, Go, or a comparable backend language.
• Proven experience building RESTful APIs, third-party integrations, and transaction-based systems.
• Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL, MySQL, or other relational databases.
• Good understanding of software architecture, data structures, algorithms, and clean coding practices.
• Experience with Git, CI/CD, automated testing, and cloud technologies such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Strong understanding of API security, authentication, authorisation, encryption, and data protection.
• Strong problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and ownership skills.
